Augmented Reality-A New Way to Play, or a New Threat?

Some people might ask what augmented reality is? Augmented reality is a form of technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.

There are people who are unfamiliar with what augmented reality is. This is simply a technology that portrays reality for a gamer into a video game, for which they see the video game to be the real world in their perspective.Image 1

Faran A. Sharif states,”Augmented reality is on fire! For me, augmented reality is successfully running away from my life of stupidity and nonsense 24/7 and going into a world of a video game only to realize that you’re in the exact same messed up life. They say you can run, but you can’t hide. For me, augmented reality feels as if you can run AND hide, and I love it!”

There are many pros and cons of using augmented reality. First of all, using AR is the best of two worlds: An essential characteristic of AR is that it combines the real world with the virtual world. Thereby, one of its advantages is that it improves the experience with the natural environment by overlaying it with virtual information. AR, an inverse communication, improves digital communication by making it more immersive with virtual information. This has applications in interactive and participative learning, distanced instruction, and remote collaboration in the workplace, among others.

One advantage, however, is that since it portrays the video game as a real-world experience from the gamer’s perspective, this helps them connect to reality. Another advantage of this technology is the fact that this technology creates a collaborative environment making the communication of this technology virtual.

There are cons of augmented reality. First of all, using AR is primarily about privacy and invasion. It is a danger to a person’s privacy and a threat to others. The security of a user may be challenged because AR systems will see what the user does. AR can thus gather a great deal of information about who the user is and what he/she is doing. Related, and even more so, to social networks. Privacy of a user could be compromised if, for example, hackers gain access to a device.

A significant disadvantage of augmented reality is that it requires large data sets to be collected, produced, and analyzed. There are also issues with intrusiveness. Still, there are AR systems about the topic of privacy and security that record the environment in real-time. This may pose legal issues just as it is illegal in jurisdiction with strict privacy laws to take pictures of random individuals and their private properties, as well as record their conversations.Image 2

Parth Patel

My name is Parth Patel. I am a current senior at Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Education High School. My interests include playing majority of sports (basketball, soccer, football), playing video games, and around with my friends. In addition to that, I also like to study, study a lot, and study even more. When I grow up, I want to become an aerospace engineer. I am into technology because it is getting more advanced as we are proceeding in the future and it allows us to access information that we don’t even know about.
