This spring arrived with rain showers and preseason for Edison’s boys and girls soccer teams. The Inventors and aspiring players have to train for hours, but can you do it without rain or heat interfering? Sofive, Soccerroof, and Pier 40 are soccer centers available for teams in New York.
Sofive is an indoor soccer facility in Brooklyn with eight fields, changing rooms, and free on-site parking. If you want to play pick up games, the price is $10. Every player has to pay $10 admission. You can bring friends to create a team or you can go on your own and be placed on a team at the field.
Currently, it’s off-peak season, from April to October. Prices to renting fields are $135 for 1 hour and $150 for 1.5 hours. The fields are FIFA regulated 5-a-side dimensions, with rebound walls and enclosed netting. It has become a popular form of playing because you can make more touches and goals. Sofive features video replay technology and has a Bar & Cafe.
“I would definitely recommend this place to Edison’s next team,” said Brian Rojas Hernandez, team captain. “Sofive is a place where people get together and just have fun. Not only is it a fun environment but it’s also competitive.”
Located at Hudson River Park, Pier 40 provides soccer fields ranging from ground-level to rooftop. At the rooftop, you can play and see a stunning view of the New York City skyline. The full sized turf fields provide enough space for 7 v 7 and 11 v 11 games. Individual players can play pick up games for free, even if you come with friends or teammates. There could be wait time because some leagues rent the space and teams can also rent for training.
“Pier 40 was actually really good because you usually play with people from different parts of New York,” said Daniel Garcia. “As a soccer player I focused on picking up different playing styles from other people.”
Socceroof, located in Brooklyn, offers fields for soccer players to develop their skills. Prices are $15 every Monday and Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and every Friday and Saturday from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. There is a Classic League and Classic Cup for players to participate in. Teams can be created with up to 5-12 players.
“When I go play, I make sure my control is on point and my dribbling is good,” said Larry Torres, Edison goalkeeper. “Since Edison’s in Division A, our techniques need to be solid and accurate.”
