Should High Schoolers Get Rest Time?

In a teenage world filled with deadlines, test scores, and extracurricular activities, teenagers are exhausted. High schoolers spend night after night trying to submit all their work while having time for themselves. By the time it’s time to go to school they are worn out and begin to struggle with their education.

“On a daily basis I am both physically and mentally drained. Everyday I have at least 9 classes with the occasional club meetings after school,” Raiba Zaman said.

The relentless stream of tasks and classes force students to drain themselves. There aren’t enough hours in a day to accomplish everything that they have to get done.

“I think on a scale of like 1 to 10. I’m probably like 8 most of the time because I don’t get enough sleep and everything gets tiring to do,” Rahul Chowdhury said.

The best way to get rid of an issue like this is by providing students with a rest time. There should be at least one period per week, whether it is during their lunch period or a gym period, where students can let themselves rewind.

“Yes, I think a rest time would help me do better in school. A time to just unwind and do something for myself without stressing out would be a perfect break for me to get back to what I would have to do,” Raisa Afrin said.

There are statistics that show the lack of sleep or rest students get are what influence a student from working to their best ability. The Centre for Educational Neuroscience, has said that more rest allows students to excel in school. Further research shows that having rest times increases productivity and reduces stress. Breaks allow memories and lessons to process better, causing students to better understand what they’ve learned.

“After staying at school for 7-8 hours a day, spending the rest of the day doing homework and other important activities, and then going to sleep late. Doing this five days at a time makes it exhausting,” Raisa Afrin said.

After long hours of school students need something to help them keep going. Having time to rest would let them focus more on their work. It would allow students to lose anxiety, improve academically, and improve their mental health, providing a better future for high school students.
