Supporters showed up in great numbers on the cold chilly morning in efforts to raise awareness and funding for the modern epidemic, Breast Cancer.
On October 21, 2018, The American Cancer Society Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk took place, an annual event where the three to five-mile noncompetitive walk essentially honors breast cancer survivors and caregivers; educate people on how to prevent and detect breast cancer; and raise funds for innovative research to help end breast cancer altogether.

Approximately 250,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, now this number can include most anyone and that is why donations and funding has been a major factor in this walk, the organization has currently raised $551,800 and is still counting. Their ultimate aim is to reach $706,000. It has various teams, members and companies contributing to the cause, some of which include: Avon, NYPD, and St. John’s University. All funds will go towards providing information and support, research and helping people diagnose the disease when most treatable.
When asked the Vice President of the National Honor Society, Rishab Pal he said, “Needless to say, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an extremely important time for many people in October. Recently I took part in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and got the chance to stand with tens of thousands of women and survivors as we walked amongst our own teams and with our families, friends, and other loved ones … Every year this walk takes place and this year was the most supportive of people. Many people had shown up in 32 degree weather with breezy cold winds hammering down upon us. This didn’t stop us from walking for what we support and honor. It was a humbling event that I had been to and too really see many students from within our own community attend is really gratifying. I look forward to next year’s walk to continue to support and honor those who had lost their lives to Breast Cancer.”
Student club members from our very own Thomas Edison High School had also been lending a hand by participating in the walk. Members of the Honor Societies, Skills USA and Key Club have all added to the cause whether that may be handing cups of water to walkers or even walking the miles to show their spirits.
